Exploring the potential of aging research,
weaving hope for the future.

We conduct basic research on aging-related diseases by elucidating the functions of “α-Klotho.”
Currently at the in vitro and animal model stage, our research is driven by a commitment to future real-world applications in society.

About Us

Gerok Inc. was established based on joint research among Gakken Holdings, Medical Care Service (MCS), and Kyoto University. We create new value by integrating the expertise of Professor Yoichi Nabeshima of Kyoto University—a leading authority in aging research and the discoverer of α-Klotho—with the business foundation of the Gakken Group, which has addressed social issues through education, healthcare, and welfare for 80 years.
Our mission is to translate research outcomes from the lab to the public swiftly, contributing to the realization of a healthy, long-lived society.

Longevity Gene “α-Klotho”

Discovered in 1997 by our Advisor and CSO, Professor Yoichi Nabeshima, and his team, α-Klotho is an anti-aging gene named after the Greek goddess who spins the thread of fate. Even a quarter-century later, it remains a crucial cornerstone of global aging research. Studies using genetically modified mice have reported that α-Klotho overexpression is associated with lifespan extension and the suppression of aging-related diseases (Kurosu et al., Science, 2005). However, these findings are based on specific animal models; efficacy in extending lifespan or suppressing disease in humans has not yet been confirmed.

Our Proprietary Technology

We are conducting exploratory research on small-molecule compounds that act on α-Klotho. Currently, our research is at the in vitro and animal model stage, and its efficacy and safety as a pharmaceutical have not been verified in humans.
Nevertheless, we see immense potential in R&D centered on these compounds. While we are currently accumulating basic research data, we ultimately aim to develop comprehensive medical approaches that extend beyond individual conditions to a wide range of aging-related diseases.

* We have obtained an assignment of rights from the inventor and independently filed a PCT international patent application.

Our business

We conduct basic and applied research on α-Klotho-related small-molecule compounds in the following areas. All research is currently at the in vitro or animal model stage, as we advance toward future clinical applications in humans.* Currently, efficacy as pharmaceuticals or regenerative medicine products has not been confirmed.

Rare & Renal Diseases

Basic research on compounds targeting progeria, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and others.

Neurodegenerative Diseases

Basic research targeting Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and others.

Healthcare

R&D on cosmetic ingredients for aging care (skincare and scalp care).
